Excitement. Adrenaline. Nerves. Skeptical.
Two of these describe Kendall, & two of them describe me. Bet you can’t guess which. 😁 The entire 17 hour plane ride from Dallas to Sydney had me looking over at my husband every hour saying “What are we doing?! This is dumb. ”
We arrived safely at 6:12am in Sydney & other than a visit to the K9 check unit in customs (thank to being in a farm in the last 30 days) got all of our bags smoothly and went directly to check into our home for the next week, Maze Backpackers hostel.
I had no idea what to expect. It is pretty much camping in a building in the tiniest room known to man, a big communal kitchen, shared bathrooms, Oh yeah, and lots of loud people. I’m still not totally crazy about it… but it could be so much worse! We are grateful to have a private room this first week or I fear I would have been even more overwhelmed than I initially was.
Day 1: We ate breakfast with Landon & Jess and then spent the rest of the day setting up bank accounts, getting food, & a few other necessities…like flip flops for the shared showers. So much eww. I obviously have a lot to get comfortable with yet😄
Thankfully jet lag didn’t hit us too bad and other than accidentally letting our 5 pm nap turn into bedtime, we’ve felt great.
Day 2: we headed out nice and early to explore Sydney. We walked to the harbor, visited the Sydney Maritime Museum, and then walked…& walked…..& walked to the Sydney Opera House and Botanical Gardens. It was everything I thought it would be. Kendall and I kept looking at each other shaking our heads in disbelief that we were actually there. Sydney really is a beautiful city! We caught the train back home since we were all pretty tired from the long walk. Jess and I then grabbed some groceries to make supper but when we saw the packed kitchen, chickened out and waited an hour or so to go back when there were less people staring at our feeble Backpackers cooking skills.
We are staying here in Sydney for about a week and are praying to find a vehicle in that time frame so we can get out on the road to more adventures!
So what have we learned so far?
Soak it all in…the good, bad, sketchy, and thrilling. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity.
